UCCT Group and TAJO Workshop.
Mexico City. 2021
Thinking of the premise suggested by the UCCT Group - reconnection with non-human intelligences-the project started from an in-situ investigation in the second and third section of the Chapultepec Forest.
In this space, in a series of walks through the park - a large part of the third section remains closed, fenced, or even as private/state property - Jimenez recorded different environmental audios leaning on various trees in the forest.
These audios featured the sound of local birds, as well as drafts, leaves and branches rustling and colliding with each other. Subsequently, the recorded audios were translated into sound production programs, where the audios could be analyzed graphically and visually, denoting the frequencies in the waves produced on the site. The graphics were vectorized and reinterpreted as symbols, where phrases, characters and graphic statements denoted a kind of language. These symbols were finally carved on stones found both on the site and in buildings on the periphery of the park.
Other Hieroglyphs invites us to think of an ecosystem (in this case, the Chapultepec forest) as a network of intelligences formulated from connections and relationships -both visible and invisible- in constant dialogue. On the other hand, exploring the path between soft materials (sound and its digitization) to hard materials (carved stone), the project reflects on the agencies resulted from the formulation of languages, where the symbolic, the phonetic, the signified and signifier meet.
