Después Ahora

Después Ahora (Afterwards Now) was a duo show with artist Valeria Álvarez at El Consultorio, a space that happened to be their studio, but also, a space where many exhibitions, performances, parties, concerts and gatherings took place from 2018 to 2020. 
During the first lockdown of the Covid19 pandemic, both artists, like many others, weren’t able to work in their studios as they would usualy do so.  This brought their processes and productions to an unstable ground, fuelling and developing during the confinement of their own places and the reduced mobility at the time. 
Coexisting with the efervescence that Mexico City is characterized from, and yet not being able to permeate their routines and processes in such environment put both artists in a state of unsettlement and inner reflection.

A series of conversations followed, aiming to manifest the desires, questions and reflections that emerged from that time.  Después Ahora is both an introductory statement from both artists’ emerging careers and an invitation to continue life, or at least, turn to the next page - and tied to the pandemic context, in any sense it could mean: socially, politically, poetically, and under the context of the temporarily frozen artistic scene of Mexico City - opening up reflections that prevailed from before, during, and after the lockdown. 

The exhibition presented several bodies of work from both artists, presenting an evident, yet opaque dialogue between their processes, reflections and outcomes. Places and non-places, relations and disconnections, reality and dreams, desires and anxieties, playfullness and obscurity, commonality and alienation: these were some of the topics that the exhibtion tied together, resulting in a young portrait of  the ambivalence and wanderment felt during the lockdown when walking through the empty version of a chaotic metropolis.
